Coming all the way from Iceland, Sjaak Lucasson will be attending our 9th Touratech UK Travel Event 2017. Sjaak Lucassen is an extraordinary globetrotter who travels around the world on his ‘rather’ unusual motorcycles. www.R1goesExtreme.com
Born in a small country he got attracted by the wide open and started to discover the world, choosing the bikes by the heart. After covering nearly every corner during almost a decade, he started with winter rides, having in mind his final goal, reaching the North Pole.
His achievements are as follows:
Nov. ’92 – Mar. ’93 Down Under 38,000km
May ’95 – May ’98 To the Other End of the World and Back 160,000km
Mar. ’01 – Aug. ’06 Around the World 250,000km
Feb. ’08 North Cape Winter Ride
Jan. – Mar. ’09 Alaska Winter Ride
Feb. – Apr. ’13 Polar Ice Ride
He will be bringing the World Travel Fireblade with 291,977 km on its counter, the World Travel R1 with almost 320,000 km under its belt, the Polar Ice Ride R1 which carried him over the frozen Beaufort Sea north of Alaska and aRctic1, the bike that he is currently building for his trip to the North Pole.
Next he is aiming for the North Pole. Starting out from Alaska he will ride over snow covered roads to Tuktoyaktuk in Canada where he will enter the polar ice. After some 2000km following mainly inhabited isles he will end this first leg on Ward Hunt Isle, the very last post of civilisation. The next winter he will continue the extreme adventure, battling temperatures of minus 40 Celsius, working his way over pressure ridges, risking to strike open water and facing Polar Bears, during the last stretch to the Geographic North Pole.
While on the Polar Ice in 2013 on his modified R1, Sjaak found out what worked and what didn’t. Therefore he is building a new bike right now. He calls it “aRctic1”, using an R1 as a donor bike. It will have tyres so wide the world has never seen on a bike and it will be adapted to the harsh climate and rough terrain. It will be on display during the whole Touratech Travel Event. He will bring also his World Travel Fireblade with 291,977 km on its counter, the World Travel R1 with almost 320,000 km under its belt and the Polar Ice Ride R1 which carried him over the frozen Beaufort Sea north of Alaska.
During the Touratech Travel Event Sjaak will be there for a relaxed chat and he will give presentations about his adventures, performed with a great sense of humour, enlivened with videos and photos. You can also,
